Cybex Equipment Series — Every Line, Explained

Cybex built distinct technology platforms across cardio and strength — not just individual machines. This hub organizes all 18 documented series across four equipment families: cardio (Arc Trainer, treadmills, bikes, steppers), selectorized strength (VR1, VR2 Dual Axis, VR3, Eagle, Eagle NX, Prestige VRS, Ion, Classic, Total Access), functional/cable (Bravo, FT Functional Trainers, Jungle Gym), and free weight/plate loaded (Plate Loaded, Big Iron).

Before you dive in

How Cybex organized its product lines

Cybex sold equipment as series — a shared technology platform expressed across many individual stations. VR2's Dual Axis motion, for example, appears on its chest press, incline press, and overhead press alike. Knowing the series tells you the biomechanics, generation, and typical build quality before you ever look at a single model number — and it applies just as much to cardio (Arc Trainer's patented arc motion) as it does to strength.

Cybex International operated as an independent engineering company until Brunswick Corporation, parent of Life Fitness, acquired it in January 2016. Several series stopped as independent Cybex designs after that point — which is exactly why the used market, and this reference, matter: the machines already built are the full and final record of those product lines.

Cardio Series

Arc Trainer, treadmill, bike, and stepper platforms built for continuous commercial duty cycles.

Patented arc motion

Arc Trainer Series

A gliding, arc-shaped motion path designed to reduce hip flexor and joint stress versus a standard elliptical — widely used in rehab and clinical fitness settings as well as general commercial floors. Lower-body models (ending in "A") and total-body models (ending in "AT") cover the full commercial range.

Step-based cardio

Stepper Series

Commercial-grade stepper units built to the same duty-cycle standard as Cybex's cardio family — a smaller footprint alternative to Arc Trainer bays.

Selectorized Strength Series

From compact VR1 circuits to premium Eagle and Prestige VRS platforms — the largest family of Cybex series by model count.

Compact circuit · ~22 stations

VR1 Compact

Space-efficient singles and duals aimed at boutique studios, hotel gyms, and smaller commercial footprints without sacrificing a full circuit.

View VR1 hub

Dual Axis · 45xx–47xx

VR2 Dual Axis

Resistance that tracks two motion planes at once on key upper-body stations, following the natural biomechanics of the joint through the movement.

Four-bar linkage · 12xxx

VR3 Circuit

The commercial workhorse line — roughly 23 stations built for high-throughput circuits in health clubs, universities, and multi-facility chains.

Original premium · 11xxx

Eagle Premium

Cybex's original premier biomechanics line, roughly 20 machines deep — long the benchmark for high-end selectorized packages.

Restyled premium · 20xxx

Eagle NX

A later 15-piece restyle of the Eagle platform, with updated shrouds and upholstery for facilities that installed newer generations before the brand's 2016 acquisition.

Variable Resistance System · 21xxx

Prestige VRS

A full VRS-loaded circuit — roughly 21 machines — spanning a complete commercial strength package, not just the two units most buyers recall.

Single & dual selectorized

Ion Series

A broad line spanning selectorized strength, Smith machine, and flexibility/stretch stations — commonly found alongside VR2 and VR3 on mixed circuits.

Functional & Cable Series

Adjustable-cable and multi-station systems built for performance training and free-pattern strength work.

Progressive Stabilization

Bravo Functional

Dual-stack functional trainers (Tall 8810, Compact 8800) plus Press/Pull/Lift and Advanced 4:1 variants engineered around Cybex's Progressive Stabilization approach to free-pattern movement.

Adjustable functional trainers

FT Functional Trainers

FT-360 and FT-325 units offering adjustable cable pulley height and a smaller footprint than the Bravo Tall configuration.

Free Weight, Plate Loaded & Racks

Plate-loaded machines, power racks, and Olympic bench stations for facilities anchoring around free-weight training.

Plate-loaded circuit

Plate Loaded

Leg press, hack squat, converging presses, and rows engineered for facilities that want plate-loaded feel with commercial-grade linkage.

Deciding Between Two Series?

These head-to-head guides answer the question we hear most: "what's actually different?"

Series Frequently Asked Questions

What does "series" mean for Cybex equipment?

A Cybex series is a distinct product line built around shared technology, frame design, and generation — for example VR2 (Dual Axis), VR3 (four-bar linkage circuit), or Eagle (premium selectorized). Each series contains multiple individual models that share the series' biomechanics and styling.

What's the difference between series pages and category pages?

Series pages group equipment by product line and generation. Category pages group equipment by function across every series — all chest press machines, regardless of which series they belong to. Use series when you know the product line; use categories when you're shopping by exercise.

Are discontinued series still covered here?

Yes. Brunswick Corporation, parent of Life Fitness, acquired Cybex International in January 2016, ending independent production for several lines. Classic, VR1, and other legacy series are fully documented because they're still running in facilities and still traded on the used market.

Which series fits a commercial floor vs. a boutique studio?

High-volume commercial floors typically lean toward VR3 or Eagle for durability and throughput. Boutique studios and rehab-focused facilities often prefer VR2's Dual Axis biomechanics or Prestige VRS. Bravo and FT Functional Trainers suit performance and functional training rooms. See the series picker guide for the full decision path.
